Theaters go digital with Sony's SXRD 4K SRX-R110CE
It's big, it's mean, it's ugly, and it can punch out over 8.8 million pixels per frame—that's right, we talking
digital cinema here, Sony SXRD 4K style. Their SRX-R110CE and SRX-R105CE, introduced earlier this month, project
quadruple the res of 1080 hi-def displays (4096 x 2160) with a 2000:1 contrast ratio at 10,000 ANSI lumens, too, so
unless you're Larry Ellison, chances are you'll only get to appreciate one of these in a wealthier neighborhoods'
theater in the near future.

So we're FINALLY progressing from seeing hairs and other imperfections on the big screen from conventional film projectors...

I worked with a prototype of one of these (I think it was serial number XXX0002) last November.
4k is achieved by sending 4 separate video feeds (single/dual-link SDI @ 24PsF) that are "combined" in the projector using 4 LCoS chips. It certainly is impressive that they are able to line up the chips so well so as not to create any sort of cross pattern between the quadrants, but it still takes some doing to sync up 4 HD video feeds on the playback device. The projector itself can upres if sent only one feed, or if using an optional input card (DVI, Component, etc), but that sortof defeats the point. At the time, Sony was also using a proprietary 4k input in-house, but were not very receptive to sharing any specifics about it.
The projector also used dual lamps, and needless to say, generated alot of heat.
